Addiction and Rehab-Related Terms

Rehabilitation glossaryWe have found that many terms are used in this field with only implied definitions that could be incorrect or incomplete. Therefore we have provided a list of rehab-related terms and their meanings for you in an effort to help. Having a wrong definition for something can be misleading or create a misunderstanding and we feel that the more knowledge someone has over any given subject the more they are able to use it for positive outcome. Those definitions with an asterisk (*) come from the Mirriam-Webster online dictionary

Glossary of Words & Definitions

Addiction* - compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful.

Detoxification* - to free (as a drug user or an alcoholic) from an intoxicating or an addictive substance in the body or from dependence on or addiction to such a substance.

Drug* - something and often an illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness.

Intervention* [intervene] - to interfere with the outcome or course especially of a condition or process (as to prevent harm or improve functioning).

Rehabilitation * [rehabilitate] - to restore or bring to a condition of health or useful and constructive activity.
